Female rulers in the footsteps of the first Countess of Flanders, Judith
Over the centuries, female sovereigns have left their mark on Ghent in various ways. The traces they left behind are not easy to find, but your guide knows them like the back of his/her/their hand!
More about this tour
On the facade of the house of the ‘Crowned Heads’, we see only men depicted. Important women were not given a place among the powerful men. The female rulers disappeared into the folds of history. During this tour they will revive. We meet the bold Judith, the crowd favorite Mary of Burgundy, the businesswoman Margaret of Constantinople, the marketing guru Margaret of York, the crazy or not crazy Johanna, the Minister of Finance Isabella of Portugal and the diplomat Margaret of Austria. These and other monarchs could do much more than embroider and dance, they left their signature on the history of Flanders.
Also curious about the role of these powerful women? You don't have to put on high heels to follow their trail, a pair of comfortable shoes will do.
